February Birthstone Spotlight: Amethyst

thumbnail 03 22129AM February Birthstone Spotlight: AmethystThe amethyst name comes from the Greek word “amethystos,” which means “not drunk.” The Greeks used this gemstone to prevent intoxication from alcohol and drank from cups made of amethyst. Amethysts were also once considered a gemstone rarer than diamonds and has been used to adorn royal jewelry as far back as the ninth century. The amethyst also has a rich history in religion as it has been used to decorate numerous crosses and is still known as the “bishop’s stone” because of the traditional ring that majority of Catholic bishops wear that contains this gemstone.

A member of the quartz family, amethysts come in a variety of shades and crystal shapes, but they are always purple. The purple color of amethysts is caused by the iron and aluminum impurities contained within the crystal and the darker the shade of purple, the better the quality of the amethyst is. Amethysts are also considered the gemstone of Valentine’s Day and this royal gem is an excellent gift as it beautiful, but doesn’t break the bank.
